11/03/2018 Habitat for Humanity presents Cycle of Hope Event

During the event on November 3, 2018, you’ll ride, raise funds, or volunteer for the cause of housing.  Please save the date and start thinking about how you and your community would like to get involved.

The courses will take cyclists from Palo Alto through the beautiful hills and valleys of Los Altos, Mountain View, Cupertino, and San Jose.  Cycle of Hope offers a ride at every skill level, whether you are a toddler on the short track or a die-hard century cyclist. In addition, we are looking for hundreds of volunteers for our water stations along the course and as well as at the start/finish-line festival.

You can learn more and register to ride at www.habitatcycleofhope.org .  If you are interested in volunteering for the event or organizing a volunteer group, please contact Tori at vbommarito@habitstebsv.org. Please register teams by August 20th and receive a discount.

Start/Finish: Hewlett Packard’s campus at 3000 Hanover Street, Palo Alto, CA 94304

Sheltering Workshops

The Winter Faith Collaborative is an interfaith movement formed to serve, shelter and advocate for the houseless community in Santa Clara County. In our first two seasons we served over 700 individuals.

Consider these sobering facts:

  • There are over 7300 unhoused in Santa Clara County.
  • We sorely lack enough shelter beds. Space for families and women and children are especially needed.
  • The coroner’s report shows a 55% increase in deaths of the unhoused in 2016, with most of these due to exposure.

We help communities work together in coordinating:

  • overnight shelters
  • meals
  • monetary & in-kind donations
  • safe car parks
  • volunteers
  • daytime warming shelters

Please join us at one of our events to see how you and your community can make a difference in people’s lives.

SiVIC Interreligious Leaders Forum: Housing

Interreligious Leaders Forum

Join SiVIC and On the Table Silicon Valley for a Conversation on our housing challenges on Sunday, November 5th at 2:30pm at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1100 Shasta Avenue in San Jose.

Housing issues touch every family in our faith community. This November, all of Silicon Valley will be in conversations sharing our concerns, experiences and solutions to the area’s housing challenges. Do you wonder: will my children be able to live here? Can the valley continue to grow? What is the best way to address homelessness? It’s time we talk.

As part of a valley-wide effort to listen deeply and learn from each other, our November Forum engages with the people in our area through On The Table sponsored by Silicon Valley Community Foundation. We can participate by adding our own stories and ideas at the SiVIC Forum.

Silicon Valley Community Foundation will survey participants for a report of the concerns and solutions that are raised. The report will be made public and used for grant making and policy decisions in our area. Add your voice to the mix and learn how to join local efforts to solve our housing crisis.

Palo Alto Faith Leaders

Habitat for Humanity of the East Bay/Silicon Valley will do a special presentation for the Palo Alto Faith Leaders group. Please bring a brown bag lunch. Penny Barrett will be the host. The presentation will include opportunities for faith communities to contribute to building and rehabbing/repair projects in the area and ways that faith communities might use their property to facilitate the building of affordable housing.

Housing One Hero

Dear Faith Leaders and Friends of Housing One Hero:

Housing One Hero invites each faith based organization to partner with Mayor Sam Liccardo to end veteran homelessness by 2017. Please join us at our Breakfast Kick-off and training. We need your help in identifying new housing opportunities which we will match with monthly rental funding and client services. Case managers are assigned to each re-housed veteran in order to address service and health needs and help bolster program success.  Today, there are over 700 homeless in our community; 260 have a housing voucher, but can’t find a home to rent.

If you have any questions, or need help RSVP’ing though EventBrite, please contact Dylan Simon at Dylan.simon@sanjoseca.gov.

Leaders Forum: Winter Faith Collaborative

The Winter Faith Collaborative is an interfaith movement that was formed to share ideas and advocate for the houseless community. We have engaged over 40 faith communities across San Jose with the collective aim to serve and shelter those in the houseless community who are living outdoors this winter.

We have partnered with the advocacy group Housing for All Alliance, Building Hope UMC Ministry, and formerly and currently houseless individuals. We are called to temporarily house those in urgent need of shelter from the cold and rain in places of worship- as the largest El Nino storms on record are about to hit.

Since our community does not have enough beds or resources to keep our 4000 unhoused residents dry and protected, all faith communities are being called upon this especially harsh winter. The city of San Jose recently passed an ordinance waiving the permitting requirements, which allows offering shelter more feasible. With over 400 places of worship in San Jose, we each only need to temporarily take in 10 individuals to save countless lives.

If unable to shelter there are still many ways to help- including volunteers, supplies, and funds to cover other costs. But the most compelling need is communities to open their doors, especially at night when the likelihood of lives being lost is the greatest. So far only four overnight shelters are scheduled to open this month. We hope your faith community may consider opening their doors and hearts.

Please join the panel discussion to find out more and how to get involved.

PLEASE RSVP to rsvp@sivicouncil.org

Speakers:

Libby Echeverria, LCSW is a clinical social worker who has worked with homeless people for over 10 years in a variety of settings.  She is also an active member of Holy Spirit Church, where one of the winter faith shelters will be opening.  Libby is passionate about working with homeless people towards health and stability, and also loves to educate and train others about the needs of the homeless population.

Gabriela Gabrian came to the US from Romania at the age of 13.  She worked for many years and had a family, but lost it all when she experienced domestic violence and a series of job losses.  She lived on the streets and drank alcohol for years, then had lung cancer twice.  After a life-changing encounter with God, she got sober, recovered her health and got housing.  She is now 7 years sober, 5 years housed and 5 years cancer-free.  She is a sponsor for many people working the 12 steps and is active at her church.

Jolene R. Jones, BA in Sociology, has worked in the affordable housing advocacy field for the past three years. She co-founded the Housing for All Alliance which is dedicated to advocacy for the unhoused in Silicon Valley. Jolene also co-founded the Winter Faith Collaborative. This is an interfaith cooperative created to house the unsheltered in places of worship in the face of the El Nino Storms. Jolene’s passion for housing the marginalized is driven by her past personal housing challenges.

Rev. Susan Smith is Pastor of Children and Family Ministries at the United Methodist Church of Willow Glen.

Michelle Covert is the Development officer for the San Jose Homelessness Response Team.

“Exodus from the Jungle” Community Response Meeting

Please join the conversation as we consider our response to the needs for winter shelter, as well as long term housing. Understanding the needs of low-income and homeless neighbors, how can we collaborate and organize to help meet their needs? Come back and share your thoughts and ideas after seeing “Exodus from the Jungle.” How will we respond?

The film “Exodus from the Jungle” will be shown again at 6:00 pm for those who have not yet seen it or who would like to see it again.

Hosted by Building Hope: a mission team of the Almaden Hills, Cambrian Park and Willow Glen United Methodist Churches in partnership with the Housing for All Alliance. Questions? susan@wgumc.org
