Interfaith Candlelight Prayer Vigil for Peace

In light of the recent violence in Baton Rouge, Turkey, France, Baghdad, Dallas and various other places, we invite you to an interfaith prayer service for peace.

Join us so that we can pray together for the victims of violence and the strength to combat it by being peacemakers.

We will pray for the courage to take action on behalf of those suffering injustice and to comfort those suffering from violence.

We will pray together to remind ourselves of God’s presence within all of us so that we can focus on what gives us hope, and what moves us to act on our concern for peace and justice in our world.

We will gather to remember our common dignity, our unique heritage as children of God, and our interconnectedness as brothers and sisters in the one human family.

2016 Caltrain NorcalMLK Celebration Train

Take the Caltrain NorcalMLK Celebration Train, presented by PG&E to the MLK2016 celebration events in San Francisco on January 18 and honor the life and legacy of Dr. King through exciting activities for all.

This new, free commemorative service is a program of the Northern California Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Foundation, in partnership with Caltrain and sponsor PG&E, and it signals the region’s dedication to continue the service begun by the late Coretta Scott King and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Santa Clara Valley, who for thirty years operated the MLK Freedom Train.

The Caltrain NorcalMLK Celebration Train will depart from San Jose’s Diridon Station at 9:45am (65 Cahill St., San Jose  95110), making stops at Palo Alto Station at 10:05am (95 University Ave., Palo Alto  94301) and the San Mateo Station at 10:22am (385 First Ave., San Mateo  94401) before heading in to San Francisco.  Once there, celebrants will be able to immediately take part in the MLK2016 March/Parade or head directly to Yerba Buena Gardens to take part in a full day of festivities.  For more information about the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, visit sfmlkday.org.  All of the day’s events are free and open to the public.

Homeless Persons’ Interfaith Memorial Service

We gathered on Monday evening to remember those who died homeless in San José this past year and also those who continue homeless in our community. Thanks to the several religious leaders who took part and to those who braved the rain to lend their support.

Special thanks to Board Member Steve Herrera for the video.

“Exodus from the Jungle”

Last December, the city of San Jose razed the country’s largest homeless encampment located on the banks of Coyote Creek and displaced over 300 homeless people who had created a community neighborhood of tents and makeshift structures they called “the Jungle.” The Jungle’s closure was a heartbreaking scene that made national headlines with its stark contrast of abject poverty amid high-tech wealth. Housing was found for 175 people as part of a pilot project by the city but, as they watched their belongings bulldozed, many of the Jungle’s remaining inhabitants tearfully spoke of having nowhere else to go. Since that time, there has been some criticism among community members that closing the Jungle only dispersed the homeless into their neighborhoods, and others have continued to advocate for the homeless with the city and county for more permanent housing solutions for all in Silicon Valley.

A new documentary, “Exodus from the Jungle,” tells the story of that December day and the community that will never be the same. We invite you to a showing of the film followed by conversation with some of the homeless community and their advocates. Please come and learn more about the need for housing and the work to create places for everyone here in Silicon Valley.

Sponsored by Building Hope: a mission team of the Willow Glen, Almaden Hills and Cambrian Park UMCs, and the Housing for All Alliance in Silicon Valley.

Celebrate! Phoenix Rising from the Ashes

Community Ice Cream Social

Join members and friends of First Unitarian Church of San José in commemorating the 20th Anniversary of surviving and rebuilding from the devastating fire in 1995.

Fire Trucks – Ice Cream – Music – Fun!

Be sure to join us for the biggest party of the year as First Unitarian celebrates 20 years of surviving a six-alarm fire in October 1995! San José Fire Chief Curtis Jacobson and District 3 Councilmember Raul Perález, along with other city officials, generous donors, church leaders, and firefighters who subdued our fire, return to First Unitarian so that we can honor their courage, strength, and determination. Children and adults will delight in the fire trucks parked along the curb, and we offer ice cream for the whole community as a way of saying thanks and pledging anew our commitment to building a better city and county.

The public is welcome. You are welcome to join First Unitarian for worship as well, 11:00 am-12:30 pm, as we hear the stories of fighting the fire and of rebuilding after great loss! Join us for some much-needed inspiration honoring the human spirit and the beauty of collaboration!
